Centre Pompidou Paris
MONDRIAN/DE STIJL

December 1, 2010 - March 21, 2011

The MONDRIAN/DE STIJL exhibition at the Centre Pompidou links the career of one of the greatest abstract painters of the 20th century to the story of one of the most fertile art movements of European modernism.
A key element of any understanding of the springs of modern art, between the end of the first decade of the century and the close of the Twenties the avant-garde movement De Stijl (Style) elaborated a vision of both art and society that aspired to universality, nourishing the ambition for a "total art."
It was in Paris, between 1912 and 1938, that Piet Mondrian, the central figure of the movement and its most famous representative, pursued his quest for visual harmony. Seeking a universal language of forms and primary colours, his radical abstraction sought to go beyond painting.
For Mondrian and other De Stijl artists, the total work of art was the key to a new world, the symbol of a renewed human community characterised by a perfect equilibrium in which each element combines with every other to form a whole.

The exhibition consists of two sections. The first, devoted to Mondrian, focuses on the drawings and paintings he produced in Paris between 1912 and 1938. Through some hundred major works, it shows the painter's development from Cubism to Neo-Plasticism, from "natural reality to abstract reality," reflecting the artistic dynamism that marked the painter's years in the French capital.
This is the first time since 1969 that a large-scale exhibition of Mondrian's work has been staged in the city where most of it was indeed produced. The second section looks at De Stijl, examining it history in parallel with Mondrian's career, through an outstanding selection of paintings, drawings and photographs.
It has as its guiding thread the cross-disciplinary practice of the movement's members, notably revealing the complexity of the collaborations between the painters, architects and designers who rallied around the three leading figures of Piet Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg and Gerrit Rietveld To accompany this unprecedented exhibition, Éditions du Centre Pompidou are to publish two major works: Mondrian (ed. Brigitte Leal), and De Stijl, 1917–1931 (ed. Frédéric Migayrou and Aurélien Lemonier).
Other publications will include Mondrian/De Stijl, an album of the exhibition; an edition of Mondrian's French writings; the republication of his key text of 1920, Réalité naturelle, réalité abstraite; and a special number of the journal Les Cahiers du Musée.

PIET MONDRIAN (1872 – 1944)
Born in the Netherlands in 1872, Mondrian first received an academic training in Amsterdam, where he gained his first commissions (traditional portraits, decorative work for churches and private houses). At the start of the new century he was regularly painting, in a Symbolist vein, the farmhouses and countryside near his family home at Winterswijk, and already showing a marked interest in the rhythmic elements of composition (trees and fences), flatness (with the raising of the horizon line to counter the effect of depth) and the geometrization of forms.
Having moved to Paris in 1912, Mondrian discovered Picasso's Cubism and abandoned the Divisionist- or Fauve-inspired painting, sometimes marked by theosophical influences, of his years in Domburg and Oele, to embark on the quest for a "universal pictorial language."
Between 1912 and 1920, he gradually developed his Cubism towards Neo-Plasticism (the new, abstract, plastic art), moving from "natural reality to abstract reality." Starting from the analytical decomposition of form, he developed a "pure" visual art based on the relationship between coloured surfaces and guided by a logic of harmony and equilibrium between elements. This horizontal/vertical dialectic, in which pure colours (blue, red, yellow) are juxtaposed with non-colours (black, white, grey) in a combinatorial geometry that abolishes perspective, allows for an infinity of modular variations.
On this basis Mondrian produced during this period several series of paintings through which he developed his theology of Neo-Plasticism. These works are ordered in consistent, systematically developed series – the "plus-minus" works, the square compositions, the diamonds, the grids. "Everything is composed by relation and reciprocity. Colour exists only through another colour, dimension is defined by another dimension, there is no position except in opposition to another position." The painting is open, seemingly a fragment of a much larger ensemble. The division of the canvas into rectangles echoes the frame, the wall on which the painting hangs, the room, the city about... Neo-Plasticism is a vision of precision that ties pictorial order to a social, spiritual and poetical utopia.
In his "sanctuary," his studio at 26 Rue du Départ in Montparnasse – a space not so much decorated as treated as if it were itself a painting, furniture and easel included, to create a total art space – Mondrian lived meagrely but far from reclusively. This experimental laboratory served as the headquarters of a considerable operation combining theoretical work, publishing and business, to promote the Neo-Plastic ideal and to develop and exploit his connections among all the abstract currents of Europe (Dada, De Stijl, Abstraction- Création, etc.).

In 1915, the same studio was the site of his decisive encounter with Theo van Doesburg. In 1918, he launched the of the De Stijl manifesto. In 1921, he showed at Léonce Rosenberg's Effort Moderne gallery, which also published his treatise Le néoplasticisme: Principe général de l’équivalence plastique, and staged the exhibition "De Stijl" in 1923.
In 1925, Mondrian took part, together with other leading abstractionists, in the first international exhibition of non-figurative art, "L’Art d’Aujourd’hui." In 1926, he did the stage design for Michel Seuphor's L’Éphémère est éternel. In 1927, he published "Le Home - la Rue - la Cité" in Vouloir, showed at the Salon des Tuileries and exhibited at Jeanne Bucher's.
In 1931, he supported the formation of the Abstraction-Création group. In 1937, he took part in the exhibition "Origines et développement de l’art international indépendant," organised at the Jeu de Paume by Yvonne et Christian Zervos. During his twenty years in Paris, Mondrian got to know not only all the artists that mattered – the Delaunays, the Arps, Jean Hélion, Robert Mallet–Stevens, Pierre Chareau, Le Corbusier, the Cubists, the Constructivists, the Dadaists and the abstractionists, but also many young artists such as Calder, who came especially to Paris in 1930 to visit his studio.
In Paris too he found his first collectors, Frenchmen like Charles de Noailles, Americans like Albert Gallatin, Swiss like Alfred Roth, and also his first disciples, such as Jean Gorin and Félix Del Marle, and critics and eulogists like Christian Zervos and Michel Seuphor.
"A poem of right angles," according to Le Corbusier, the Neo-Plasticist microcosm of 26 Rue du Départ became the crucial reference point of a new vision of the world that subordinated the individual to the universal .
As such, it was visited by the greatest photographers of the time, among them André Kertész, Rogi André and Florence Henri, who immortalised it in pictures published in art journals the whole world over.

DE STIJL AND NEO-PLASTICISM
The Dutch avant-garde movement De Stijl (Style) is an essential key to any understanding of the springs of Modernism. It formed around three central figures: the painters Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg and architect and furniture designer Gerrit Rietveld.
Other members of the original group were painters Bart van der Leck, Georges Vantongerloo and Vilmos Huszar, architects JJP Oud, Robert van’t Hoff and Jan Wills, and poet Anthony Kok, who would be joined by graphic designer Piet Zwart and architect Cornelis van Eesteren.
It was in 1918, a year after the official foundation of the group and the publication of the first issue of the journal that publicised and promoted the movement's teachings that the founders of De Stijl explicitly articulated the aesthetic and social vision that drew them together: the group's first manifesto called for a new equilibrium between the individual and the universal and for the emancipation of art from the constraints of the cult of individualism. This quest for the utopian and universal might be summed up in the aphorism: "The goal of life is man; the goal of man is Style."
Both utopian vision and practical engagement in the production of the real in an industrial world, De Stijl drew on the Hegelian tradition and on Theosophy, an esoteric doctrine then popular in the Netherlands and elsewhere. The founders of the movement were however primarily concerned with the formal – pictorial or architectural – expression of the principles of universal harmony. Painting, sculpture, graphics, furniture design, architecture and soon town planning served as the medium of experiment. De Stijl's creations were multidisciplinary by nature, transcending the traditional academic boundaries between major and minor arts, between decorative art, architecture and urbanism.
The guiding theme of the movement during its fourteen years of productive existence might be taken to be the spirit of the city. The spatiality of the work of art gradually shifts from being the basis for an analysis of the world to a means of construction of the urban social and political environment. In this respect, the spatialization of the work of art constitutes a specific experience of the world, ordering it and giving substance to community, embodying and making possible the equilibrium between individual and collective, between rational and sensuous, knowing and doing, spiritual and material.
For De Stijl, the priority was to find a formal language that answered to the problems of industrial society in the wake of the Great War and to adumbrate the strategies for the establishment of a new social order.

The method that served the vision was Neo-Plasticism, which at first represented a simple radicalisation of the avant-garde practice of the time. "The Cubists," said Mondrian, "refuse to take their own artistic revolution to its logical conclusion. The modern sensibility cannot be reduced to the integration of multiple points of view, but must tend towards an immediately universal and rational plastic language." Van Doesburg, for his part, called for "the elaboration, in connection with the plastic arts, of simple fundamental principles understandable to all."
It was through the rigorous employment of primary colours alone (blue, yellow, red), unmodulated white and black, and straight lines laid out at right angles, and the limitation of forms and the geometrization of volumes that this brought that the members of De Stijl invented a new grammar of forms. The analytical simplification of the formal lexicon and the harmonious dynamics of proportion offered no scope for tragedy, in the end projecting aesthetics as a universal.

1912
Mondrian moves to Paris. Shows at the 28th Salon des Indépendants, henceforth signing his name Mondrian with a single "a". Influenced by the Cubists, he paints nudes, still lifes (Still Life with Ginger Pot) and views of Parisian buildings. Adopts Analytical Cubism. The evidence of reality disappears behind the network of geometrical lines and patches of graded monochrome.

1919
Returns to Paris.
1921
Publication of the pamphlet Le Néo-plasticisme. Principe général de l’équivalence plastique is published by Léonce Rosenberg's Galerie de l’Effort Moderne. In his earliest Neoplasticist paintings, squares and rectangles of primary colours, or of black, are organised within an asymmetrical grid of black lines. With the flat ("Het Vlak") he sought to do away with space and volume, going beyond visible nature to arrive at "a purer (cosmic) manner." The artist was to understand colours intuitively and integrate them into a harmonious composition. Takes part in the exhibition "Les Maîtres du Cubisme" at Galerie de L’Effort Moderne," alongside Picasso, Braque, Gris, and Léger amongst others. Settles at 26, rue du Départ. Very quickly begins to fix painted boards to the walls of the studio, which becomes the abstract concretisation of paintings to come.
1922
Retrospective organised by the Stedelijk Museum to mark the artist's 50th birthday. Despite artistic recognition, Mondrian lives in poverty, continuing to do flower paintings that he sells to make a living.
1923

Summer: Piet Mondrian moves to Laren, in Holland, the declaration of war making it impossible for him to return to Paris, where he has lived since 1912. Theo van Doesburg is mobilised and sent to the Belgian frontier near Tilburg, where he gets to know poets Evert Rinsema and Antony Kok.
1915
November: Van Doesburg publishes in the journal Eenheid an article on the work of Mondrian, which he has recently discovered.
1916
January-February: Van Doesburg visits Mondrian, who introduces him to the German theosophist Mathieu Hubertus Josephus Schoenmaekers. March-June: Theo van Doesburg, Eric Wichman and Louis Saalborn establish the artist's society De Anderen [The Others]. May: Van Doesburg meets architects Jacobus Johannes Pieter Oud and Jan Wils and painter Bart Van der Leck. His work is close to that of Vilmos Huszár in the same period. Robert van’t Hoff builds the Henny villa at Huis-ter-Heide, whose geometric radicalism wins international recognition. Helene Kröller- Mu..ller acquires recent works by Van der Leck, whose simplified forms and areas of flat primary colour bring it very close to pure abstraction.
1917
Van Doesburg makes his first Neoplastic paintings, called Compositions, based on the use of geometrical grids in accordance with Mondrian's precepts.
October: Publication of the first issue of the journal De Stijl, whose editor is Van Doesburg. Among the contributors are the painters Mondrian, Van der Leck, Huszár, Gino Severini and Georges Vantongerloo, the poet Kok and architects Oud, Wils, Huib Hoste and Van’t Hoff.

Kazimir Malevitsch and Suprematism
in the Ludwig Collection

5 February - 22 August 2010

After the exhibition "A Slap in the Face of Public Taste. Cubo-Futurism and the Rise of Modernism in Russia" Museum Ludwig contin-ues its project series on the Russian avant-garde with a cabinet exhibition of its Malevich collection. This is one of the largest collections worldwide of Malevich's work and will be shown for the first time in nearly twenty years. The approximately fifty graphic works, four paintings and one sculpture from all periods of his work afford viewers an insight into the artist's development from figurative art to abstraction and back again to figuration. As part of the exhibition preparations, our restorers subjected the four paintings to an art-technological examination. Ten suprematist works by artists from Malevitsch's circle, Ekaterina Bugrova, Ivan Kliun, Nina Kogan, Liubov Popova, Kliment Redko, Nikolai Suetin and Ilya Chashnik, will complement the exhibition and demonstrate Malevich's influence on his contemporaries.

The concept of Suprematism denotes both abstract composition using pure shapes as well as Malevich's own theory of pure abstraction in art; for him, this implies "everything that goes beyond what has to this date been created in art".

The focal point will be the presentation of the two paintings from his Suprematist period, "Supremus No. 38" from 1916 and "Suprematist Composition" from 1915. The latter underwent substantial restoration for the exhibition and both paintings were subjected to an art-technological examination. The findings will be comprehensively documented as part of the exhibition.

On the basis of the results of the examinations carried out (UV, infrared, X-ray) and based upon the history of the paintings (exhibitions; change of owner; earlier restoration measures), the state of preservation of the paintings as they are today, and also how they were created, will be rendered visible. From detailed close-ups, the viewers will learn how to spot certain traits of painting technique like, for example, surface structures and brush strokes - but also the impact restoration can have on the appearance of the paintings. In preparation the exhibition, also numerous works on paper by Malevich were restored.

Like the paintings in the collection, the drawings by Malevich too stem from various periods of his work, from his beginnings around 1903 to his famous invention and development of (abstract) Suprematism all the way to his return to figuration. This change of course in his later work has only recently become the subject of art historical research. The extensive Ludwig Collection is ideally suited to the exploration of abstraction as well as figuration. The public will be able to trace and comprehend the development of Malevich's work. The confrontation of his early concrete works with his later ones makes a unique comparison possible.

A catalogue which documents the complete findings of the art technological examinations and features further scholarly essays on Malevich will be published in April 2010 with the support of the Friends of the Wallraf Richartz Museum and the Museum Ludwig e.V.

With over 800 works, the Museum Ludwig is home to one of the world's largest collections of the Russian avant-garde. In May 2009, a se-ries of exhibitions started which highlights new aspects of the col-lection and its main emphases. The series goes hand in hand with in-tensive research into the techniques used in the works, the picture frames and the dates. Curator of the series is Katia Baudin, the deputy director of Museum Ludwig, with Emily Joyce Evans acting as assistant curator. Petra Mandt worked on the art technological examinations and their documentation.

Kröller-Müller Museum Otterlo

toont oeuvre Van ’t Hoff in:
'Alles of niets'

Robert van ’t Hoff

Architect van een nieuwe samenleving
2 april – 29 augustus 2010

& the International Avant-Garde

TATE MODERN LONDON

4 February – 16 May 2010

"He is the coolest cat in 20th-century art" - The Daily Telegraph

Tate Modern presents the first major exhibition in the UK devoted to the Dutch artist and pivotal figure of the European avant-garde, Theo van Doesburg (1883-1931). This is a unique and exciting chance for van Doesburg's work to be seen for the first time in the UK. This follows in the footsteps of a series of exhibitions looking at different aspects of Modernism, conceived by Vicente Todolí, Director of Tate Modern.

Van Doesburg, who worked in disciplines within art, design and text, founded the far-reaching movement and magazine De Stijl. This artistic movement of painters, architects and designers sought to build a new society in the aftermath of World War I, advocating an international style of art and design based on a strict geometry of horizontals and verticals.

Van Doesburg travelled extensively in Europe in the 1920s making connections and collaborating with avant-garde contemporaries of the time. This exhibition explores Doesburg's role as promoter of Dutch Neoplasticism, his Dada personality, his efforts to influence the Bauhaus, his links with international Constructivists, and his creation of the group Art Concret. Including over 350 works (many unseen in the UK before) by key artists as Jean Arp, Constantin Brancusi, László Moholy-Nagy, Piet Mondrian, Francis Picabia, Gerrit Rietveld, Kurt Schwitters and Sophie Taeuber, the exhibition features van Doesburg's rarely-seen Counter-Composition paintings and designs for the Café Aubette in Strasbourg, furniture such as Rietveld's iconic Red-Blue chair, as well as typography, magazines, stained glass, film, music, sculpture and more. Curated by Gladys Fabre, Independent Curator and Vicente Todolí, Director Tate Modern.

GEMEENTEMUSEUM DEN HAAG

GEORGES VANTONGERLOO
Voor een nieuwe wereld

23 januari 2010 t/m 16 mei 2010

Van Doesburg and the International Avant-Garde: Constructing a New World

20 oktober 2009 t/m 3 januari 2010

Er verschijnt een rijk geïllustreerde Engelstalige catalogus Van Doesburg and The International Avant-Garde.

John Heartfield (1891-1968)

Fotografie als wapen,

20 september 2009 t/m 3 januari 2010

LISSITZKY +

Part 1 – Victory over the Sun

19 september 2009 – 05 september 2010

‘Victory over the Sun’
The Russian artist Kazimir Malevich designed the fantastic costumes and sets for this opera’s premiere in 1913. The opera was staged for a second time after the Russian Revolution. This 1920 production was mounted in Vitebsk by members of Unovis (Advocates of new art), a group of artists who were striving after a new and dynamic form of art. Inspired by this performance, Lissitzky thought that it would also be possible to recast the work as an electromechanical show. He designed a number of figurines and a dynamic stage set for these doll-like figures. Besides an edition of the final result, the Figurinnenmappe, a portfolio of lithographs depicting several of the opera’s characters, the Van Abbemuseum’s collection includes unique sketches for these figurines and a number of printer’s proofs.

From two dimensions to three
Designs by Lissitzky will be presented in a threedimensional form throughout the exhibition. For example, in the first room the red and black square from his book The Story of Two Squares will be realised as cubes, with the three-dimensional models based on the Figurinnenmappe displayed inside the red cube. In the introduction to this portfolio, Lissitzky actually provides instructions for anyone who would like to create threedimensional models based on these illustrations. However, nobody has ever done this, and the Van Abbemuseum is seizing the initiative to have several of these models designed and realised. These will be installed in the spatial machinery that Lissitzky conceived, so that visitors can walk around them. The reconstruction of the renowned Proun space from the museum’s collection will be presented in the black cube. The designs associated with the work inside the cubes will be displayed in the immediate vicinity of the red and black cubes. In the second room the focus shifts to Lissitzky as a graphic designer, while the third room sheds light on his international activities.

Lissitzky’s architectural designs are presented in the fourth room, together with models of several designs by other artists and architects. The presentation in this space includes a towering maquette of his Cloudprop skyscraper. A blown-up version of the design for the New Man figurine is to be mounted on the window in the stairwell, while two enlargements of designs for propaganda posters on trams in Vitebsk will be presented on the walls each year. Room five is devoted to the story of how the Van Abbemuseum acquired its Lissitzky collection, and in the sixth room the public can find complementary information. Outside, a six-metrehigh rendering of one of the figurines, the Gravediggers, specially constructed for this exhibition, is to be installed in the museum lake.

Lissitzky was a painter, a graphic artist and a designer of architecture, furniture, books and posters. He was a writer, a photographer and an indefatigable traveller. He was, moreover, a veritable mediator between the cultures of Soviet Russia and Western Europe. He collaborated closely with Kazimir Malevich, Hans Arp, Kurt Schwitters, László Moholy-Nagy, Theo van Doesburg and many other people, including architects, theatre directors and filmmakers from across Europe. Inspired by innovations in technology and science, in the 1920s these artists were searching for a new, revolutionary visual idiom with which they wanted to represent a utopian reality. Artists employed this visual idiom for the advancement of a new socialist society, most especiallyin Russia. Malevich became the mentor and later colleague of Lissitzky. It was through Malevich that Lissitzky became acquainted with Russian Futurism. The outbreak of the First World War forced the young Lissitzky to leave Germany, where he had been studying architecture. He returned to Russia, first to Moscow and then to Vitebsk (now in Belarus), where he taught at the People’s Art School, which Chagall had founded there after the Revolution. Malevich moved to Vitebsk to teach at the academy, and Lissitzky subsequently became a convert to the dynamic, geometrical art that Malevich termed ‘Suprematism’. This movement’s ambition was to change the world. The past was dead; the only monuments of any significance were ‘Monuments of the Future’, as Lissitzky called them.

The museum has invited Professor Dr. John Milner of the Courtauld Institute in London, who is an authority on the Russian avant-garde, to devise a series of presentations around the Lissitzky collection. The aim of this series is to show Lissitzky’s oeuvre, as well as work by his colleagues and contemporaries, in several different contexts. This three-part series casts new light on Lissitzky’s oeuvre and the context in which it was produced, as well as on Lissitzky as a person. Lissitzky could be regarded as an important precursor of the contemporary artists, someone who was aware of his social and political role as well as of the demands that he made of himself and others with regard to artistic innovation.
The second exhibition (September 2010 to September 2011) presents Lissitzky’s work alongside the work of several radical female artists with whom he collaborated, while the third exhibition (September 2011 to September 2012) focuses on the dynamic human figure. Guest curator of the project is John Milner, project leader at the Van Abbemuseum is Willem Jan Renders.

The Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven is one of Europe’s leading museums for contemporary art. The museum’s extensive international collection of around 2700 works of art includes key works by Lissitzky, Picasso, Kokoschka, Chagall, Beuys and McCarthy. The museum has an experimental approach towards the issues of art and society. Openness, hospitality and knowledge exchange are important to the Van Abbemuseum. We stimulate ourselves and our visitors to think about a range of subjects, like the role of the collection as a cultural 'memory' or the museum as a public place. International cooperation and exchange have made the Van Abbemuseum a place for creative cross-fertilisation. A source of surprise, inspiration and imagination.

Futurisms: Precursors, Protagonists, Legacies

International conference
University of Utrecht
1-3 December 2009

A century after the launching of the first Futurist manifesto in 1909, and 65 years since Marinetti’s death on December 2, 1944, Futurism seems to be the one avant-garde movement that was most successful in enduringly inspiring artists and writers around the world and in thus bridging the gap between theory and praxis. This conference aims at a better/deeper understanding of Futurism’s significance by focusing on the (relative) innovative qualities of the movement (Precursors), lesser-known actual Futurist projects and careers (Protagonists) and its lasting cultural and political relevance (Legacies).
Like most avant-garde movements Futurism suggested to present a clear break with the art and ideas of the past. Yet many of its defining characteristics can be traced to earlier movements, artists and currents. Futurism’s defining forwards looking rhetoric tended to obscure these relationships as well as its own regressive character. The Precursors-segment of the conference will try to address these issues.

The canon of Futurist works and artists is fairly limited. The scope of the movement has been demonstrated in major exhibitions (catalogues), but many major works, concepts and careers remain relatively unknown. In the Protagonist-section the conference acknowledges the diversity of the Futurist project by showing, analyzing and discussing contributions that even most specialists, scholars and curators tend to leave out of the picture.
The Legacies-part deals with the heritage of Marinetti’s programme, which is overwhelmingly present, in the arts as well as in society at large. New internet applications have abolished boundaries of time and space. WiFi offers the opportunities already advocated in Marinetti’s concept of ‘wireless imagination’. Emerging young poets all over the globe engage in destroying syntax and introducing mathematical sign language, thus accomplishing on a worldwide scale Marinetti’s Futurist poetics of telegraphic language. After the success of concrete poetry and musique concrète in the 1950s, multimedia, mixed media and inter-mediality presently reign in the arts world. And also ideologically the Futurist legacy has not lost its topicality, nor its highly controversial impact, considering the re-emergence of Futurist ideas on the hygiene of war in the rhetoric on the war on terror.

Futurism’s presence in today’s world calls for reflection, both on the topicality of the futurist legacy during the past century and on its transformations. In mapping Futurism’s development and presence in technological, artistic and political terms, the conference hopes to gain better understanding of the movement’s legacy as well as of the cultural dynamics of transgression vs regression which in the long run determines Futurism’s lasting success.

Victory Boogie Woogie
